Properties and Development Prospects of Nylon Elastomer


Nylon elastomer, also known as thermoplastic composite polyamide elastomer, is a block copolymer composed of a hard segment of polyamide and a soft segment of aliphatic polyester or polyether. Nylon elastomer has the advantages of high tensile strength, good elastic recovery, high low temperature impact strength, good low temperature resistance, and convenient processing. Therefore, it is widely used in electronics, electrical appliances, automobiles, food packaging, medical equipment, sporting goods and other fields.

Compared with other thermoplastic engineering elastomer materials, nylon elastomer has the advantages of transparency, good processability, light weight, and good comprehensive economic performance, and has a good application research prospect.

At present, most nylon elastomers on the Chinese market use polyetheramide block copolymers, which can be mainly used to control the production of cables, hoses, wires and other products. At present, Europe is the largest nylon elastomer market in the world, with a market share of about 36%, followed by China and the United States. The total market share is about 42%. Driven by the market development needs of downstream enterprises, the global PEBA market economy continues to increase and grow, reaching 3.8 billion yuan in 2020.




There are two main production methods for nylon elastomers: water non-chain ring polymerization method and anionic polymerization method, wherein water non-chain ring polymerization method is further divided into diacid method and diisocyanate method. The production of melamine by water leaving the ring polymerization method has been widely used in practical production.

Due to the high technical development threshold for nylon elastomer production, the research on production capacity is mainly concentrated in developed countries, and there are few enterprises that can effectively realize nylon elastomer production in the domestic economy.

Nylon elastomer has excellent performance, and the current demand is mainly concentrated in Europe and Japan. It is mainly used in the production of soles, ski boots and other products, but the overall application demand is limited. From the perspective of industrial development, in order to improve performance and reduce costs, nylon elastomers need to be blended with other engineering plastics to form thermoplastic elastomer alloys, which are conducive to improving product performance, opening up new application areas, and promoting industry development.
